Juanita Baez, single mother of 3 kids (Roxanna, Lola, & Manny), tried her best stay on her feet, stay sober, and get her kids out of foster care. Not many people are as big a success story as Juanita.

After a year in a terrible foster care home for Lola and Roxy, and being separated from their little brother who was in a different foster care home, Juanita wins her kids back. Excited to start a new life together in a new town, small but clean apartment, and a new outlook, they try to piece together enough to make a perfect family.

Where are these perfect families? Can there even be such a thing? One where everything goes so right, where no one ever hurts each other?

Shortly after moving back together, Juanita meets a nice, hardworking guy and they move to a nice house. All seems well. Except, one day when Roxy is out walking her two dogs….

Roxy is missing. Prior victim turn vigilante, Flora Dane, and detective DD Warren work together to piece together who might have had motive to commit this horrible murder and to find Roxy!

During their investigation, they quickly realize there are many secrets that are starting to unravel. Turns out… Juanita was suspicious of Lola and Roxy’s time in foster care. Roxy and Lola refused to talk about it. As she dug further, consulted a lawyer, and her suspicious grew, her “perfect” family seems less and less perfect.

How do you become a family again? When you have lost so much, how do you learn to trust enough to get it back?

Our Review…

From the first page to the last, you will read furiously. Roxy, Lola, and Manny will become a part of you. Their story will break your heart. Their fight will become your fight. You will no doubt think about them while trying but failing to fall asleep.

This is a fast paced page turner and has many surprises and twists. Wait until you find out who the killer is!!!! We look forward to reading more from Lisa Gardner!
