Where they Found Her by Kimberly McCreight @Kimmccreight

From the author of the New York Times bestseller and 2014 Edgar and Anthony nominee Reconstructing Amelia comes another harrowing, gripping novel that marries psychological suspense with an emotionally powerful story about a community struggling with the consequences of a devastating discovery.

At the end of a long winter, in bucolic Ridgedale, New Jersey, the body of an infant is discovered in the woods near the town’s prestigious university campus. No one knows who the baby is, or how her body ended up out there. But there is no shortage of opinions.

When freelance journalist, and recent Ridgedale transplant, Molly Anderson is unexpectedly called upon to cover the story for the Ridegdale Reader, it’s a risk, given the severe depression that followed the loss of her own baby. But the bigger threat comes when Molly unearths some of Ridgedale’s darkest secrets, including a string of unreported sexual assaults that goes back twenty years.

Meanwhile, Sandy, a high school dropout, searches for her volatile and now missing mother, and PTA president Barbara struggles to help her young son, who’s suddenly having disturbing outbursts.

Told from the perspectives of Molly, Barbara, and Sandy, Kimberly McCreight’s taut and profoundly moving novel unwinds the tangled truth about the baby’s death revealing that these three women have far more in common than they realized. And that their lives are more intertwined with what happened to the baby than they ever could have imagined.

  1. So I’m on my long awaited vacation in Jamaica. First two nights not so great sleep, night three I finished Into the Water which had taken a while to get into, but it was another great recommendation from you and well worth hanging in. So it’s like 11 pm and I open up “Where they found her” and read until I was done at close to 5 am, I blamed the resort noise and uncomfortable bed to hide my addiction…books. Yes I went to sleep after 5 am when my husband was up for the day. I pleaded for some good sleep and told him to go do resort stuff without me, I needed sleep badly. He understood. So I was up and immediately downloaded the cellar and it triggered my brain immediately that this was not a fall asleep book even at page 3. I forced myself to put it down at like page 89 and go to sleep for two hours and woke up to try and recoup some resort time. All the while wondering when I could get back to my book. By 1pm I was at swim up bar, by 5pm we’d been liquored up enough to decide a nap was in order before dinner. After seriously like 9 hours of sleep over the previous three days, I crashed. I woke up at 11:47pm, my husband was asleep, we’d missed the resort returnee dinner and free gift, but I needed that sleep. I needed more but instead I pulled out my book and read for two hours before forcing it out of my hand to go to sleep, my addict brain pounding, knowing my fix was nearby but I had to push through the pain. Which leads to 5:47 wake up and I’m reading again. Husband is awake and I’m trying to figure out how to pretend to be asleep and read at the same time. So we go through resort Day 4 and yeah! He’s tired and needs a nap. I set the alarm so “we can nap” and at first snore I pull out my drug…I mean book, and I’m 7/8 done by the time alarm goes off. Resort activities abound. I have no pics, I had fun, but bowed out on last activity scheduled bc of being tired (not a lie) but I had 30 remaining pages at home and a saved book that came out on 8/15. So here I am. Three books done in four days, saved book downloaded, my husbands “pretending to be interested bc I love her and other addictions are worse” face when I discuss a book character or situation like this is happening in real life, emblazoned in my brain like a screenshot for every time I see the supportive feign interest face. Reading is fundamental but at what point do I seek help from my higher power and 12 steps of reading addiction?
