“For once in my life, I wanted to surrender to romance, to believe love was sparkly and special and not something that made you look in the mirror and shake your head at your own stupidity.”

“I heard someone say once that many of us only seem able to find heaven by backing away from hell. And while the place that I’ve arrived at in my life may not precisely be everyone’s idea of heavenly, I could swear sometimes — I hear angels sing.”

Maggie is brought into this family through Nico, the man she falls in love with and marries after his wife dies. Having been a single mother for the whole of her life and from a long line of single mothers the family she marries into is very different from anything she knows. Her knew stepdaughter is devastated by the loss of her mother and, maggie is convinced, hates her. But she loves Nico and Nico loves her, and they talk about everything and know all each others secrets…don’t they?

Maggie finds the whole family odd, they act strange. Her mother-in-law overbearing coming and going when she pleases. Her brother-in-law, Massimo, is the sweetest most loving man she has known. However, Massimo’s wife, Lara, is the one she finds so off. She is skittish and mousy something Maggie knows nothing about. Thing progress with the family fairly well until they decide to clear out the attic space of  Nico’s late wife’s things to make room for her sewing. Maggie stumbles on a secret that could tear her husband and new stepdaughter apart. She decides that even tho the secret isn’t hers she will keep it for the sake of her new family. That is until she realizes the full extent of this secret and what other secrets it leads to, until there is not longer a choice to keep it to herself. Can she salvage any of her new family with the truth or will it break them all. Either way she can’t keep it to herself any longer.

This story was amazing I felt like I was in this family feeling what they felt going through it all. The strength and independence in Maggie, the growth and realization of Lara, and when pushed the side Anna will stand on will all make you feel so much you will belileve they are real. I love when a book truly becomes a world and you feel it. The silent wife was without a doubt one of those books.
